Duncan Jones and other crew members discussed the Warcraft Movie in detail at this years BlizzCon convention in Anaheim, CA!

If you had the chance to hit BlizzCon this year then you more than likely attended one of the largest panels of the show – the Warcraft Movie Panel. Director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) was on hand and he was joined by Academy Award winner and Special FX Supervisor Bill Westenhofer (Life of Pi, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) as well as other members of the team, to discuss all things related to the upcoming film!

We learned so much from this panel and we also got to see our first official pieces of concept art from the movie! It was incredible! We’ve included some highlights below as well as images of the concept art pieces that were revealed. Enjoy!

Basic Highlights

  • Warcraft’s Costume Designer is Mayes Rubeo (Apocalypto, Avatar)
  • Warcraft’s Director of Photography is Simon Duggan (I, Robot, The Great Gatsby)
  • Production will begin in early 2014 and most of the filming will be done in Vancouver, Canada
  • The movie will mostly take place in the Eastern Kingdoms of Azeroth
  • The team is using everything in the game for inspiration, all the way down to rocks, leaves, trees and the like – they are not just focusing on the big things from the games

Quotes from Director, Duncan Jones

Director Duncan Jones had a lot to say during the panel. Some of his more notable comments are below.

When he first read the script, he said he felt that it focused too much on the Humans / Alliance side of the conflict and that didn’t work for him. He said:

It’s about both sides. It’s going to be red and blue. I want the audience to feel for the Orc heroes as much as the do the human ones.

When asked to confirm all of the recent casting rumors, Duncan Jones, said they were not ready to discuss the cast quite yet (note: probably because deals were still in the works). However, he was asked a follow up question about if the cast had been selected, to which he gave a great response:

Yup!

Duncan also gave us some tidbits on the storyline of the movie as well. He confirmed that in-fact the storyline would be following the events of the original Warcraft RTS game, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, released in the 1990s. It will focus on the events of Anduin Lothar vs. Durotan. When asked about casting for Durotan he had this to say:

It’s been hard to find an actor who looks like Durotan. Every time I meet an actor I just try to squish his face!

Quotes from Special FX Supervisor, Bill Westenhofer

As mentioned earlier, Bill Westenhofer who is a special FX living legend as well as a multiple Academy Award winner for his work on The Golden Compass and Life of Pi, will be the Special FX Supervisor for Warcraft! He had a lot of things to say during the panel as well.

Westenhofer, a long time hardcore World of Warcraft player (he’s been playing since beta in 2004), had this response when he was first approached about the Warcraft Movie. He said he was asked if he was familiar with the Warcraft Universe:

I just about spit out my coffee!

He went on tell a story about how when he was on location filming The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, he would get up at 2am so he could raid in WoW on his level 90 mage. Pretty awesome to hear that he is such a dedicated player!

He also commented that the characters would be actors in make up and not a bunch of CGI. Additionally, he mentioned that the tone of Warcraft would be similar to that of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator! And, when speaking specifically about some of the weapons currently being crafted for the film, he said:

The swords that are being built are the biggest swords a human being can wield!

Are you getting excited yet? It certainly sounds like Westenhofer will be the right guy for the job!

First Warcraft Concept Art Pieces Revealed!

Another epic surprise was the reveal of some concept art pieces created for the film. We got to see first hand on a HUGE screen behind the panelists some concept art for Draenor, Dalaran, Ironforge, and Stormwind! It was pretty incredible!
